Using Technology for Assessment

The videos in the past two weeks have been very helpful.  I have seen how the students react to the use of technology and have applied it to their learning.  The 'Changing Assessments in Education' was helpful in seeing the different types of assessments and how each is applied.  I believe it helps me to actually see and hear from others how to implement assessments successfully.  The formative assessments that I conduct in my classes are hard to determine if I am doing them properly.  I am getting the information that I need from my students, but I feel that there is something more I could do to make the assessments better.  This week, "Technology in Assessment Practice' was so very helpful. The video with the teacher actually showing how he has implemented technology was fantastic.  It was good to see this in action.  Although, he had a year to do the research, his implementation of why and what he was doing with his students was great.  I would like to begin to use more technology for assessments in my math classes, I just need to find the time to make it work.  There were a lot of good ideas for quizzes like Socrative, Quizziz, Survey Monkey, and Clickers.  One I found was qualtrics which looks fairly well formatted and reviews say it is easy to follow and set up, which would be good for survey questions.  However, I found out there may be a price for this.  I am still checking.  The survey I would like to have would need to have questions to see how well my students comprehend the material in a unit.  So the questions would have to be open ended.  This would allow me to continue on or relook at the material.  I just had an open-ended quiz I gave my students and they did very well on it.  This was after one week on the material.  Now, if I could have done this last week as we were going through the material, I could have adjusted the method in which we did the lesson.  I am finding more and more ideas to  implement in my classes.  I just love to learn.

  1. I am glad to hear that you too found the videos helpful. I was wondering from someone outside of my district, if a website was put together with resources like these videos and other awesome platforms that have been found were put together like BK gave us. Would you use that as a go to? I am just thinking how helpful it was for me to have a resource with links that I simply had to click on to go to and it could possibly take some stress off other teachers about finding cool platforms to use in their classroom, if this resource was provided.

    1. The videos and links are very helpful. I never would have had the time to find all those websites on my own. Most of them I had never heard of. I did check on Qualtrics and you do have to have a license. GVSU has a license that faculty, staff and students can use. I think something like this would be very useful for other teachers. Perhaps it is something that could be done at a Professional Development meeting.

  2. Tami, GVSU has a site license for Qualtrics- it won't cost you anything! You can go to the IT website and get the download and instructions.

  3. Hi Tami,
I loved the videos this unit as well because it really does help to get excited about the possibilities when we can see them in action. I also appreciate your comment about "finding the time" to implement new tools. I could get lost for days enjoying learning new tools and yet day-to-day it seems difficult to fit everything in that I have to achieve, making learning new tools feel like a luxury. I hope as we get educated about the new directions with teaching, learning and technology, more time will allotted to teachers to simply explore and learn themselves.
